Yamaga Garden Lantern Festival
Overview
Yamaga Garden Lantern Festival (山鹿灯籠まつり) is a festival of the Omiya Shrine, located in Yamaga Onsen in Kumamoto. The festival is held annually from August 15th to 17th. It is one of Kumamoto prefecture’s representative annual events.
Women in yukata (casual kimono) dance around the city with lanterns made of gold and silver Japanese paper on their heads.
Lantern dance (灯籠踊り) is the main event of this festival. A thousand people lantern dance is the climax of the festival. A thousand women in yukata with lanterns on their heads dance elegantly. It is a fantastic sight that a thousand lights float in the dimness.
If you visit Kumamoto in summer, this festival is worth seeing.
For 2022, it was announced that Yamagata Garden Lantern Festival will be cancelled in 2022 due to Covid-19.
