Sasebo Burger

Overview

Sasebo burger（佐世保バーガー） is a handmade hamburger and specialty of Sasebo city in Nagasaki prefecture.

Sasebo burger does not refer to a single style of hamburger, but rather a generic term for hamburgers that are handmade and made-to-order served at restaurants in Sasebo city.

Sasebo Burger was born around 1950 when local restaurants started making burgers based on a recipe given to them by the U.S. Navy stationed in Sasebo City.

Sasebo Burger Certification System was established in 2007. The Sasebo City Health and Welfare Department, people in the travel industry, and others examine the burgers based on criteria, such as originality and independence, reliability, locally produced for local consumption, and handmade, and only stores in Sasebo city that pass the examination are designated as Sasebo Burger Certified stores.
