Okawachiyama Village
Overview
Okawachiyama village, Imari City, where the sheer folding screen rocks create a unique landscape reminiscent of a landscape painting. In the Edo period, the Saga clan (the Nabeshima family) used the official kiln, and now it is a pottery town called “the village of secret kilns.”
Along the mountain path, there are various porcelain objects along with historical cultural assets such as the ruins of old kilns, which are in harmony with the quiet townscape and nature. Brick chimneys and kilns stand side by side in Okawachiyama, reminding us of the 300 years of history and tradition. A pottery market is held in spring, a wind-bell festival in summer, and the Nabeshima Clan Kiln Autumn Festival in autumn.
In the “Michelin Green Guide Saga Web Edition,” which introduces tourist attractions with a recommendation scale of 1 to 3 for foreign tourists, Okawachiyama is introduced as a two-star destination, meaning “worth a side trip.
