Kofukuji

Overview

Kofukuji (興福寺) is located in Tera-machi of Nagasaki city. It was built in 1624 and is the oldest Obaku temple in Japan. The Obaku-shu is one of 3 schools of zen in Japanese buddhism, started in the Edo period (1603 ~1868).

The main hall, Daiyuhoden, of Kofukuji is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. In addition to Daiyuhoden, there are many cultural assets and monuments in precincts of the temple. With these assets and monuments, the entire temple area is designated as a prefectural historic site.

Daiyuhoden was originally built in 1632, but it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1689. In 1865, it was severely damaged by a storm and was restored in 1883.

Within the area, there is a small garden, called Tomeien. And, there is a pond in the garden which was built in the Edo period. Visitors can enjoy green tea while looking out over the pond.
