Nagasaki Peace Park

Overview

Nagasaki Peace Park is a comprehensive park with an area of approximately 18.5 hectares. It is located in Matsuyama-cho, approximately 2.5 km north of Nagasaki Station.

The park was built to pray for peace. On August 9, 1945, the atomic bombs were dropped in Nagasaki city. The park was built in the area where the atomic bombs were dropped and the hillop to the north of the hypocenter.

The Peace Statue, built in 1955, is the symbol of the park. The statue is 9.7 meters high. The statue’s soft face represents God’s love and Buddha’s mercy. The right hand raised vertically to the sky represents the threat of the atomic bomb. The left hand extended horizontally represents peace. The right foot on the side represents the tranquility of Nagasaki City immediately after the bombing. The erect left foot represents the lives saved. And the lightly closed eyes pray for the repose of the war victims’ souls.

There are 15 monuments symbolizing peace presented from all over the world, such as Peace Monument from Portugal, Statues to protect future generations from the Netherlands, and Anthem of Life from Italy.

The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum is a part of the park.The museum deals with materials related to the atomic bombing of Nagasaki City. Next to the museum, there is the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. It is a facility to commemorate those killed by the atomic bomb and those who died afterwards, and to pray for world peace.

In addition to facilities and monuments for peace, there are sports facilities in the park, such as Nagasaki Baseball Stadium, Nagasaki City Rugby and Soccer Stadium, and Nagasaki Civic General Pool.
